Challenges in schools and education in Germany, Austria and Switzerland –
Areas of tension, problems and possible solutions in dealing with uncertainty, ambiguity and high levels of stress in post-pandemic times
The first post-corona school year has come to an end, and there are no sustainable solutions in sight for the current major challenges in schools and education.
In the coming school year 2023/24, schools will continue to be confronted with enormous learning deficits in some cases and increasing psychological stress among children and young people as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, a shortage of staff at schools, slow progress in digitalization at schools and increasing heterogeneity in classrooms, to name just a few of the most pressing challenges.
Uncertainty, ambiguity and high levels of stress – how do stakeholders in schools and education deal with these challenges? Do we need a paradigm shift – away from pessimism and towards an optimistic spirit of optimism – without falling into naivety? How can we strengthen our resilience? Is decluttering our everyday working life a viable approach? Do additional resources alone help us to overcome stress?
One thing is clear: in order to overcome the plethora of challenges, we need strategy(ies), systemic answers and concerted action in which everyone bears responsibility.
